South African Airways Announces Increased Flight Frequency to Mauritius
South African Airways (SAA) has announced a significant increase in the frequency of its flights between Johannesburg and Mauritius. Starting December 1, 2024, the airline will operate two daily flights on this popular route, up from the current single daily flight.
This seasonal increase will last until March 29, 2025, in response to growing demand during the holiday season, providing passengers with greater flexibility and convenience.
Mauritius remains a favored holiday destination for South African travelers, notably due to the visa exemption policy allowing stays of up to 90 days.
South Africa ranked as the fifth largest source market for tourists to Mauritius, following France, the United Kingdom, Réunion, and Germany.
The market is also showing robust growth. In 2022, 96,316 South African tourists visited Mauritius, and this number rose to 106,169 in 2023—an increase of approximately 10,000 visitors.
Additionally, thousands of South Africans reside in Mauritius and frequently travel back and forth between the island and their home country.
Under the new schedule, SAA flights will depart from Johannesburg at 9:40 AM, arriving in Mauritius at 3:40 PM.
A second flight will leave at 10:45 AM, landing at 4:45 PM. Return flights from Mauritius will depart at 4:30 PM and 5:35 PM, arriving back in Johannesburg at 6:55 PM and 8:00 PM, respectively.
Tebogo Tsimane, the Acting Chief Commercial Officer of SAA, explained that the decision to double the flights was driven by increasing demand from both leisure and business travelers.
“Mauritius has long been a popular holiday destination for South Africans, offering a tropical island experience just four hours from Johannesburg.
The island is also a key investment destination and financial services hub, with many major South African companies expanding their operations there,” he stated.
Tsimane highlighted the strategic importance of this increase in flight frequency as part of the growth of intra-African trade, which is facilitated by the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“SAA aims to be the airline of choice for connecting Africans and transporting goods. The African region presents exciting growth opportunities and is at the heart of our future plans,” he concluded.
With this expansion, SAA is strengthening its position in a key market, responding not only to tourism demands but also to business and investment needs. The airline’s ambition is to solidify its role in the region.
