In a development that may not sit well with opposition lawmakers, Adrien Duval, the newly appointed Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius, has received an official invitation to visit India. The invitation was extended by Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who expressed his congratulations on Duval’s recent appointment.

In his message, Birla stated, “On behalf of the Parliament of India and my own behalf, I would like to extend my warm felicitations on your appointment as the speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mauritius.”

This gesture suggests that Duval’s recent reforms and initiatives have captured the interest of Indian authorities.

The invitation includes an opportunity for Duval to bring along a delegation to India, where they will engage in discussions about parliamentary best practices.

Birla emphasized that this visit would serve as a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and explore ways to enhance parliamentary collaborations between both nations.

Joining Duval on this trip will be Urmeelah Ramchurn, Clerk of the National Assembly, and Saseeta Rakha-Ramsahye, Head of Digital Services.

The delegation’s itinerary includes a tour of various departments within the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament.

India’s political system is a parliamentary democracy that is heavily influenced by the British model.

The structure of the Indian Parliament and its first-past-the-post electoral system are directly based on the systems established by British colonial rule before India gained independence.

During his visit, Duval is also expected to have discussions with Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, which could further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between Mauritius and India.
