At just 25 years old, Sheldon Yan took a daring step by introducing Chatime, the renowned international bubble tea franchise, to the Mauritian market. His entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen have allowed the brand to achieve rapid success. Six years after its launch, the opening of the 15th outlet in Kendra marks a significant milestone in the local development of Chatime.

After completing his secondary education at the College du Saint-Esprit in 2010, Yan traveled to China to study architecture at the University of Nottingham Ningbo.

This decision was partly driven by his desire to gain knowledge in a demanding field. However, he soon realized that architecture did not align with his professional aspirations.

“During my studies, I quickly realized that this field was not for me, but I still earned my degree in 2015,” he shared.

Upon returning to Mauritius with his diploma and a strong command of Mandarin, Yan shifted gears and entered the hospitality industry as a sales executive.

“This role enabled me to develop essential business skills and understand the nuances of the local market,” he added.

This experience proved invaluable when he decided to venture into entrepreneurship.

Yan’s choice to launch Chatime in Mauritius was fueled by a combination of personal passion, entrepreneurial vision, and the recognition of a market opportunity.

“At that time, bubble tea was booming in Asia, and I saw a chance to introduce this popular product to Mauritians,” he explained.

His motivation was twofold: to share his love for bubble tea with the local public and to build a business where he could have direct influence over decisions and direction.

However, launching a franchise at the young age of 25 was not without challenges. One of the major hurdles was securing initial funding.

Fortunately, Yan credited his parents with playing a crucial role in his success. “Not only did they believe in my idea, but they also provided invaluable financial and moral support.

Their help was pivotal in overcoming financial barriers and launching the franchise,” he said.

Running a business requires mastering various aspects, from supply chain management to marketing, human resources, and customer satisfaction.

Yan had to quickly acquire a broad skill set to ensure the efficient operation of his enterprise.

Despite these challenges, his experience launching and growing Chatime in Mauritius has been rewarding.

The Opening of the 15th Outlet

The inauguration of Chatime’s 15th outlet in Kendra, Saint-Pierre, symbolized the franchise’s success in Mauritius.

“This expansion not only reflects a growing demand for bubble tea but also signifies the evolving brand’s responsiveness to local consumer preferences,” Yan explained.

He noted that the new outlet features a more dynamic and colorful design, fresh packaging, and a catchy slogan: “CUPS OF JOY.”

Adapting to Mauritian tastes has been a key factor in Chatime’s success. “We have consistently worked to introduce unique flavors that resonate with local palates.

Incorporating familiar ingredients and flavors, such as tropical fruits, has helped create an authentic and appealing menu for the community,” he emphasized.

Moreover, the introduction of seasonal offerings and limited-time products fosters a sense of novelty and excitement surrounding the brand.

Yan also highlighted Chatime’s significant contribution to the local economy, stimulating growth and creating job opportunities across the island.

“Each outlet provides stable jobs and career growth opportunities for the local community, serving as a training ground for young Mauritians,” he stated.

For young entrepreneurs looking to follow in his footsteps, Yan advised pursuing one’s passion and choosing a business idea that genuinely motivates them.

“Starting small but thinking big is essential. Young entrepreneurs don’t need to have everything figured out from the outset. The key is to begin with a manageable project and learn along the way.”

He also emphasized the importance of self-confidence in one’s abilities.

Looking ahead, Yan envisions continued expansion for Chatime in Mauritius, including the introduction of new products and exploration of new market opportunities.

Innovation remains at the heart of the brand’s strategy as they plan to surprise and delight customers with fresh options.

Balancing Entrepreneurship, Sports, and Family Life

Juggling his responsibilities as a business leader, athlete, and family man is undoubtedly a challenge for Yan.

He relies heavily on his parents and team members within the company. “Delegating tasks and empowering my staff allows me to focus on strategic decisions while ensuring the smooth operation of daily activities,” he explained.

Trusting his team is essential for maintaining balance in his life.

“Having a supportive spouse is also a tremendous asset. Whether it’s a family dinner, a weekend outing, or just relaxing at home, we make the most of our time together,” he shared.

For Yan, balancing entrepreneurship, competitive sports, and family life requires discipline, dedication, and a strong support system.

Although it is not always easy, he believes the rewards of watching his business thrive, succeeding in taekwondo, and creating special moments with his family make it all worthwhile.

“Each role enriches my life in its own unique way, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to pursue my passions and responsibilities simultaneously,” he concluded.
