As the countdown to the upcoming elections intensifies, the political landscape in Mauritius is buzzing with a central question: Is the gamble taken by the leaders of the blue alliance worth the potential rewards? This inquiry has gained momentum following the recent meeting of the Labour-MMM-ND alliance held on Sunday, August 11.

At the forefront of this political drama is Xavier-Luc Duval, the leader of the PMSD party, who has been both praised and criticized for what some see as a masterstroke in political maneuvering.

His son, Adrien Duval, has been appointed as the Speaker of the National Assembly, largely bolstered by votes from the current government.

This appointment raised eyebrows—could it be a strategic ploy, or merely a convenient opportunity?

After all, how many potential allies would refuse such an enticing position, even if it lasted only a few sessions before the Assembly is dissolved?

Observers noted that this might be a gesture from the MSM (Militant Socialist Movement), a reminder to the PMSD that past grievances pale in comparison to the allure of a prominent political role.

Several justifications have been put forward by Duval regarding this choice. For instance, replacing a controversial Speaker could be seen as the PMSD “cleaning house” for a new alliance, which could resonate with voters.

Additionally, the historical significance of installing the first Speaker from the general population has been touted as admirable.

Most importantly, it appeared to be a strategic move to prepare the PMSD’s base for a potential coalition with the MSM, a party they had previously opposed.

In stark contrast, the Labour-MMM-ND alliance is perceiving this move as a betrayal.

Leaders, including Navin Ramgoolam, have railed against Duval and his son with passionate fervor, labeling him a “traitor” and condemning the actions as “the greatest political betrayal in history.”

Véronique Leu-Govind, a former supporter of the blue alliance, dramatically challenged Duval to face the upcoming elections on his own, as if playing a high-stakes game where every action counts.

Interestingly, Adrien Duval’s appointment seemed to have revitalized the PTr-MMM-ND alliance, which had been struggling to gain momentum.

Veteran politician Paul Bérenger has displayed renewed enthusiasm, declaring that the current situation (referring to Xavier-Luc Duval) presented a unique opportunity.

His statements reflected a newfound hope, underscoring the intricate and often ironic nature of Mauritian politics.

The recent momentum following the La Louise meeting has rejuvenated the Ramgoolam-Bérenger duo, which now envisions a clear path to reclaiming power.

Ramgoolam emphasized that their alliance represents “the bridge to the future,” pledging grand plans to rebuild the nation with a vision that extends 50 years into the future. Such bold proclamations undoubtedly raise expectations.

However, for the PMSD, the challenge remained. Duval will have to navigate the potential pitfalls of his son’s controversial appointment throughout the campaign.

This decision, rather than being a mere political formality, may become a constant source of scrutiny and contention for the party leader and his followers.

Despite the challenges facing the MSM-PMSD alliance, the outcome of the Sunday- August 11 meeting, while impressive, is only a snapshot of the current public sentiment.

Drawing definitive conclusions about the future government is premature, as many developments are anticipated before election day.

The MSM-PMSD coalition is already strategizing its response to the changing political winds.

As the campaign unfolds, the situation remains fluid; alliances may strengthen or fall apart, and rhetoric will be carefully crafted.

Ultimately, only the public voting will determine the outcome. So, is the political game worth the gamble? Only Xavier-Luc Duval will know for sure on election day.

The voters will decide whether this move was a betrayal or a shrewd tactic. In the meantime, observers can only watch the unfolding political drama with keen interest.
