Foreign Affairs Minister Advises Mauritians: Exercise Caution in Bangladesh & UK
In a statement released on August 5, Maneesh Gobin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mauritius, urged Mauritian citizens currently residing in Bangladesh and the United Kingdom to exercise caution in light of the escalating unrest in both countries.
“We are closely monitoring the evolving situations in Bangladesh and the United Kingdom,” the minister said.
“We strongly call for an immediate end to the riots and looting.”
He noted that, so far, no distress signals have been reported from Mauritian citizens in either location.
The minister advised residents to prioritize their safety by staying indoors and remaining vigilant.
The government of Mauritius will continue to keep a close watch on developments in both countries, Gobin confirmed.
Bangladesh has been engulfed in protests for several weeks, leading to nearly 300 casualties. The unrest intensified following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had been in power for 15 years.
The demonstrations have largely centered around issues such as rising inflation and youth unemployment.
Over the weekend, 47 textile companies signed a statement expressing their solidarity with the protesters.
In the United Kingdom, anti-immigration demonstrations have been organized in various cities by far-right groups, contributing to a charged political climate.
