808 Dogs Dead: 3 MSAW Employees Face Consequences
In a shocking revelation, a disciplinary committee report from the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) has uncovered the grim circumstances surrounding the deaths of 808 dogs at their Port-Louis Animal Home between October 2020 and February 2021.
The report, dated November 2021, implicates three MSAW employees in this tragic incident.
The investigation highlighted that the dogs suffered from immense neglect, resulting in extreme malnutrition and a lack of proper care.
Disturbingly, some of these animals resorted to cannibalism due to the severe food shortages they faced.
Initially, the inquiry suggested that 784 dogs had been found dead; however, further inspections, including kennel statistics, revealed that the actual number was even higher at 808.
The report cited several key factors contributing to this catastrophic situation, including overcrowding in the kennels, inadequate separation of sick animals from the healthy ones, and overall poor management of the facility.
In addition to the three employees directly responsible for the Animal Home, two other officials have also been implicated.
They are accused of violating the Animal Welfare Act of 2013.
In light of these findings, the disciplinary committee has recommended legal action against the implicated individuals, aiming to address the severe animal welfare violations that have occurred at the MSAW.
This harrowing incident has raised serious concerns about the welfare of animals under the care of this organization and calls for urgent reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Shakeel Mohamed addressed the concerning situation regarding the Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) just before the adjournment of the National Assembly this week.
In a statement to RadioPlus on the afternoon of August 7, the Labour Party MP expressed his frustration over the lack of action from the Ministry of Agro-Industry, which has been ongoing for three years.
When approached for a comment on the matter, Julien Georges, the director of MSAW, stated that the organization has taken the recommendations made by the disciplinary committee into consideration.
However, attempts to obtain a response from Minister Mahen Seeruttun regarding the issue have been unsuccessful.
The ongoing situation has raised significant concerns regarding animal welfare management within the country.
