Workshop Unveils Strategies for Enhancing Child Protection Against Trafficking

A training workshop held on Wednesday, July 31, saught to enhance the skills of key stakeholders in addressing human trafficking practices. This initiative, organized by the Human Rights Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, in partnership with the Mauritian police, is part of the observance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, celebrated on July 30.

This year’s theme emphasized the need to “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.”

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, one in three trafficking victims globally is a child, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures.

During the workshop, the Secretary-General of the Human Rights Division stressed the importance of collective efforts in combating human trafficking, noting that children and women are the most vulnerable populations.

To combat this pressing issue, the Mauritian government has launched several initiatives. These include the National Action Plan on Trafficking in Persons for 2022-2026, developed in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration.

Amendments to the Combating Trafficking in Persons Act have also been introduced to strengthen legal frameworks, ensuring that a victim-centered approach prevails, prioritizing support and non-prosecution of victims.

Additionally, the newly enacted Private Recruitment Agencies Act, effective from February 16, 2024, seeks to ensure ethical recruitment practices and protect the rights of workers in line with international standards.

The Secretary-General also mentioned ongoing efforts to establish memorandums of understanding with source countries of foreign workers, focusing on the rights and safety of these individuals.

Furthermore, she highlighted that Mauritius’s commitment and progress have been recognized in the U.S.

Trafficking in Persons Report 2023, where the country was upgraded to Tier 2 status.

The critical role of law enforcement in the fight against human trafficking was also underscored, emphasizing the need for comprehensive action to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
