Renovation Work at Moka Market Raises Concerns Among Vendors

Vendors at the Moka Market are expressing their frustration over the disruptions caused by ongoing renovation work, which has been underway since late May.

Premila, a vendor operating at the market located in front of Moka Hospital, voiced her concerns about how the renovations have affected their daily operations, leaving many merchants in a state of uncertainty.

“The ongoing work is seriously disrupting our activities,” she stated.

“We are not aware of the changes that will be made or when these renovations will be completed.”

Additionally, Premila noted that the new temporary location where vendors have been relocated lacks visibility, which has negatively impacted foot traffic to their stalls.

In response to these concerns, Sudhir Soonarane, the president of the Moka District Council, acknowledged the issues faced by the vendors.

He explained that officials have been appointed to keep merchants informed about the renovation plans.

“The project has faced delays because vendors continued to operate while contractors were working,” he pointed out.

To mitigate disruptions, arrangements have been made for vendors to set up their stands at the back of the market during the renovations.

Soonarane assured vendors that the renovations would be completed “by next week,” and he anticipated that the market would be ready to welcome both merchants and customers under improved conditions.

“We will hold a lottery to allocate stalls to vendors, and all necessary information will be provided to them,” he added.

However, Premila remains dissatisfied with what she describes as a “lack of communication and consideration” from the authorities.

“We were not in agreement with these changes, and we feel neglected,” she lamented. In light of this, Soonarane promised to take appropriate measures to ensure that all vendors receive timely updates and that their concerns are addressed adequately.
