Motion of Censure Filed Against New Speaker Adrien Duval
Just two sessions into his role as Speaker of Parliament, Adrien Duval finds himself the target of a motion of censure initiated by the opposition coalition comprising the Labour Party (PTr), the Militant Socialist Movement (MMM), and the New Democrats (ND).
The opposition leader, Arvin Boolell, explained during a press conference yesterday that the motion stems from Duval’s recent public appearance alongside Minister Anjiv Ramdhany and potential MSM candidate Roshan Santokhee in the Grand-Baie–Poudre-d’Or constituency.
Boolell criticized Duval for engaging in political activities, asserting that, as Speaker, he should maintain a stance of impartiality.
He reminded attendees that Xavier-Luc Duval had previously stated that Adrien Duval had resigned from all positions within the Mauritian Socialist Party.
He also announced that the opposition would attend Parliament today, July 30, in protest against Duval’s actions.
Patrick Assirvaden, president of the Labour Party, claimed to have information indicating that Duval had traveled in the same vehicle as Anjiv Ramdhany and Roshan Santokhee.
Assirvaden reported that political speeches were made during this outing and voiced concern over Xavier-Luc Duval discussing a conversation between the Speaker and Arvin Boolell regarding an invitation for the opposition whip to attend the parliamentary question draw.
According to Assirvaden, he and Aadil Ameer Meea were given only one hour to attend this session last Wednesday, July 24, following Duval’s call, which contributed to their absence.
Meanwhile, Paul Bérenger, leader of the Militant Socialist Movement, expressed that he had received information suggesting that Adrien Duval had participated in political meetings and that he was gathering details on the matter.
Arvin Boolell reiterated a letter he had sent to the Speaker regarding the seating arrangement.
While Duval did not respond to their inquiries, Xavier-Luc Duval welcomed the opposition’s decision to expedite the motion of censure.
“They are feeling destabilized by Adrien Duval’s appointment as Speaker. They have a fear of him,” he remarked, adding that the opposition acted disruptively during Adrien Duval’s swearing-in ceremony last Tuesday, July 23.
He accused them of fleeing just as Parliament was set to discuss significant legislation, such as the Finance Bill, and concluded that this situation would ultimately benefit Adrien Duval. “It will be nothing short of a positive development for him,” he stated.
