Democracy on Decline: 47% Say PM Ignores Laws and Courts
On Wednesday, July 17, StraConsult released the results of the Democracy ScoreCard for Mauritius from 2012 to 2024. According to the survey, 47% of respondents believed that the Prime Minister is ignoring Parliament, laws, and courts.
Additionally, the survey found that 66% of respondents preferred democracy to any other system (compared to 85% in 2012).
Amédée Darga, Managing Director of StraConsult, explained that the survey revealed that Mauritian citizens are not satisfied with their country’s democracy.
“The respondents have a preference for democracy, but it is in decline. It’s quite serious,” he said.
The survey also asked respondents about their confidence in Parliament. Would the results have been different if the survey had been conducted after the Speaker of the National Assembly’s resignation?
Amédée Darga clarified that the survey was conducted in April-May 2024, and he does not believe that the responses would have been different.
The survey is part of a report titled “African Insights 2024: Democracy at Risk – The People’s Perspective”, which involved 39 countries on the continent. In Mauritius, 1200 people were surveyed between April and May 2024.
