Adrien Duval Named Speaker Amid Opposition Fury

After Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth presented a motion proposing Adrien Duval as successor to Sooroojdev Phokeer at the resumption of parliamentary sittings on July 18, opposition parliamentarians from Labour-MMM-ND expressed their discontent with the nomination. “Illegal”, they shouted before entering the chamber.

According to the opposition Labour-MMM-ND, the session to elect a new Speaker should have been presided over by Deputy Speaker Zahid Nazurally. However, this did not happen.

Nazurally, who is also a member of the Muvman Liberater, intervened to try to calm tensions.

The nomination of Adrien Duval from PMSD Party as Speaker of the National Assembly did not unfold in a pleasant atmosphere.

Adrien Duval was unable to complete his speech and had to suspend the session. It was unprecedented in Parliament.

As recently elected Speaker of the National Assembly, Adrien Duval was heckled by the opposition while delivering his speech.

“Illegal” could be heard from the opposition side as Adrien Duval, son of PMSD leader Xavier-Luc Duval, took his oath as Speaker after his name was proposed by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth to succeed Sooroojdev Phokeer.

Adrien Duval suspended the session after informing the chamber that he had “named” certain opposition members.
