New Speaker to be Elected on Thursday 18th’s Parliamentary Session
A new Speaker will need to be appointed during the parliamentary session scheduled for this Thursday, July 18. This is in accordance with Article 7(1) of the National Assembly’s Standing Orders, which states that “no business shall be transacted in the Assembly, except the election of a Speaker, at any time when the office of President is vacant.“
As a result, the Assembly must – (a) during its first session after a general election; and (b) if the position of Speaker becomes vacant at any time before the next dissolution of the Assembly, during its next session after the occurrence of the vacancy – elect a President from among its members, excluding ministers and private parliamentary secretaries.
Sooroojdev Phokeer resigned from his post as Speaker on Tuesday, July 16, due to health reasons.
