A special parliamentary session has been convened by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth today, Friday July 12, is sparking curiosity among the opposition parties. However, a closer look at the agenda revealed that there is no pressing legislation to be voted on in urgency.

The only item on the agenda is a Private Notice Question and debates on the Water Resources Bill, which will be voted on today, July 12.

Another bill awaiting attention is the Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, which was first presented in its initial reading on July 2nd. Surprisingly, it is not included in today’s, July 12, agenda.

The Finance Bill is another outstanding piece of legislation that remains to be passed through parliament.

However, parliamentarians have been demanding that it be circulated well in advance due to the significant amendments required to over 100 existing laws.

According to l’Express source, Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy has the discretion not to present the Finance Bill, but he could instead draw from the Consolidated Fund and Contingencies Fund as authorized by the Constitution under sections 106 and 107 for the next six months.

The motives behind today’s special parliamentary session remain unclear, leaving many to wonder if it is merely a symbolic gesture or a precursor to more significant developments.
