2 Victims, Rs 15K Stolen from Bank Accounts: Police on the Hunt

A 35-year-old business owner and a 68-year-old security guard have fallen victim to fraudulent transactions on their savings accounts after losing their debit cards. Despite their efforts to notify their respective banks, the transactions were carried out without their knowledge.

The two men have lodged complaints with the La-Tour Kœnig police station, which has launched two separate investigations into electronic fraud.

The common thread between the two victims is that they both lost their debit cards and contacted their banks to report the loss and request that the accounts be blocked.

However, despite these measures, fraudulent transactions were carried out on both accounts.

The first victim, a 35-year-old businessman, lost his debit card on July 4, 2024, at a commercial center in La-Tour Kœnig.

The next day, he contacted his bank to report the loss and requested that his account be blocked.

A few days later, on July 8, he went to the bank in Port-Louis to obtain a detailed statement of his account.

To his horror, he discovered that all his savings of Rs 9,496 had been stolen through various bank transactions.

On July 10, he provided investigators at the La-Tour Kœnig police station with a detailed copy of the fraudulent transactions for the purposes of the investigation.

On the same day, a 68-year-old security guard discovered that he too had fallen victim to a similar fraud.

He had lost his debit card between July 5 and 6 near the Frank Richard State College in La-Tour Kœnig.

The pensioner immediately went to his bank and obtained a detailed statement of his transactions.

Upon reviewing it, he learned that unauthorized transactions had been carried out with his card at a supermarket, gas station, and restaurant, among other places, totaling Rs 6,045.

Police at the La-Tour Kœnig police station are currently reviewing surveillance footage from commercial establishments where the thefts took place to identify suspects and bring them to justice.
