Nomination Day: Candidates’ Reveal for Constituency No. 10 By-Election

Early morning, July 11, Avineshwar Dayal has officially been launched as the (MSM) candidate for the by-election at Constituency No. 10. Additionally, three independent candidates – Indranee Poongavanum (student and resident of Floréal), Kreshnaraz Baungally (retired police sergeant), and Nityanand Mity Ragnuth (former teacher and consultant in investments) – have also registered their candidacy.
In a ceremony held at the “Nouveau Bazaar” in Bel-Air, amidst a light drizzle, the supporters of the Mauritian Solidarity Movement (MSM) gathered to accompany Avineshwar Dayal, the son of late Raj Dayal, as he officially launched his candidacy for the by-election.
The event was marked by the absence of opposition parliamentarians, leading many to speculate that this by-election has the trappings of a mere formality.
Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General and Foreign Affairs Minister, Sunil Bholah, Minister and Member of Parliament for Constituency No. 10, and Ismael Rawoo, Member of Parliament for the Muvman Liberater Party, were already present at the location.
The crowd waited for the arrival of candidate Avineshwar Dayal, son of the late Minister and Police Commissioner Raj Dayal.
Meanwhile, Indranee Poongavanum, an independent candidate and resident of Floréal, was the first person to register her candidacy for the by-election at Constituency No. 10 (Montagne-Blanche/GRSE).
During a press conference earlier that morning, she highlighted the challenges faced by the middle class in Mauritius.
Other independent candidates who registered their candidacy on Thursday, July 11, included Kreshnaraz Baungally, a 67-year-old retired police sergeant from Riche-Mare, Flacq; and Nityanand Mity Ragnuth, a 74-year-old consultant in investments from Camp-Ithier, Flacq.
The by-election is scheduled to take place on October 9 to fill the vacant seat left by Vikram Hurdoyal after his revocation as a minister in February. The registration exercise will continue on July 11 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Bel-Air SSS.
