MP Mahen Gungapersad Files Complaint Against “Scandalous” Online Post
Yesterday evening, July 9, MP Mahen Gungapersad visited the Goodlands police station to file a formal complaint regarding a social media post claiming as defamatory and aiming at tarnishing his reputation.
According to Gungapersad, the post, which was published on Facebook, suggested that he was involved in a scandal while serving as the rector of a institution.
The MP, who is a member of the Labour Party, added that the sole purpose of the post is to harm his reputation and undermine his public image.
Gungapersad further alleged that the page on Facebook, which frequently targets individuals affiliated with the Labour Party, has a history of spreading false information and engaging in online bullying.
He stated that he is a victim of “deep fake news” given the approaching general elections, and that urgent action needs to be taken against the page’s owner.
The police have launched an investigation into the matter, with Gungapersad urging authorities to take decisive action against the individual responsible for the defamatory post.
It is essential for online platforms to uphold ethical standards and prevent the spread of false information, particularly during election periods when misinformation can have significant consequences.
The swift investigation by the police will help to ensure that justice is served and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
Gungapersad’s decision to take legal action is sending a strong message that such online attacks should not be tolerated also highlighting the need for greater accountability from social media users.
