In a remarkable display of parliamentary tenacity, Labour MP Ehsan Juman outsmarted Sooroojdev Phokeer’s attempted to block him from asking questions about the Financial Services Commission’s (FSC) lease of a building owned by PSH Investment Ltd, a company linked to Avinash Gopee.

The drama unfolded during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, July 2, when Juman asked Minister Sunil Bholah, who was responding for the Minister of Finance, about the lease agreement.

Bholah revealed that PSH Investment Ltd, owned by none other than Avinash Gopee, had leased “four to five floors” at 7 Exchange Square Building in Ebène for a monthly rent of Rs 4,655,150.

As Juman prepared to ask his next question, Phokeer, who had previously attempted to offer his “guidance” to the MP, jumped in and interrupted him, saying “I have not given you the floor! No ‘thank you!’ Why ‘thank you’ for nothing?” and then proceeded to offer his own guidance, claiming that Minister Bholah was not the substantive Minister of Finance.

However, Juman remained calm and politely pointed out that Bholah was indeed the substantive Minister and that he had the right to ask questions related to the topic.

Phokeer’s attempts to block Juman’s questions only led to more controversy, as the MP revealed that the building in question had been vacant for six months despite being leased for Rs 4.6 million per month.

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) had also not issued a press release about the lease agreement.

The investigation further uncovered that SBM Bank also has a deal with PSH Investment Ltd for multiple floors in the same building in Ebène.

The bank is undergoing a massive relocation project from Port-Louis to Ebène, which raised questions about the true purpose behind the deal.

When asked about their motives, a reliable source close to the matter hinted that it would be more beneficial to inquire about who is behind PSH Investment Ltd.

In another development, it emerged that FSC had leased parking spaces at Ebène CarPark Ltd for an annual rent of Rs 5,425,200.

The identity of the company behind Ebène CarPark Ltd remained unknown.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) has also been found to be a client of PSH Investment Ltd, leasing 5,000 square meters of office space at a monthly rent of Rs 3,59 million.

However, unlike the FSC’s lease agreement, which included fully fitted offices with parking and syndicate fees.

Juman’s determination to uncover the truth about Avinash Gopee’s deals has sparked widespread interest and concern among citizens.

As the investigation continued, one thing is clear: Ehsan Juman has once again demonstrated his commitment to transparency and accountability in government.
