The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Republic of Mauritius, Fayez Meshel Altemyat, presented his letters of credence to President Prithviraj Roopun at the State House in Réduit in the middle of the week.

He is the first Saudi ambassador to be stationed in Mauritius, as Saudi Arabia now has an embassy on the island.

The Saudi consulate has been a full-fledged diplomatic mission in Mauritius since April 18, 2024.

During his presentation of the letters of credence, Fayez Meshel Altemyat was accompanied by the Mauritian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Showkutally Soodhun.

For the new Saudi ambassador, this diplomatic development demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s desire to strengthen its relationship with Mauritius “in all areas.”

He also stated that his main objective was to make efforts to strengthen friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

He also emphasized his commitment to further strengthening ties in the economic, political, and cultural sectors.

One recent example is the National Cancer Center, inaugurated last Wednesday, May 8.

It was funded by an investment of Rs 1.1 billion from the Saudi Fund for Development.

Additionally, he mentioned the keen interest of Saudi investors in expanding their business opportunities in Mauritius.

There is also talk of improving air connectivity between the two countries.

Mauritius and Saudi Arabia have maintained friendly and diplomatic relations since 1978.

The two countries are considering establishing a political consultation mechanism to strengthen this bilateral cooperation.
