Mauritius celebrated its first gold medal in swimming on Sunday night as Anishta Teeluck emerged victorious in the 200m backstroke final.

Teeluck not only clinched the gold medal but also set a new national record in the event.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, Teeluck had posted the fastest time in the 200m backstroke heats with a time of 2 minutes, 23 seconds, and 22 hundredths (2:23.22).

In the final later that evening, she crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 17 seconds, and 71 hundredths, setting a new national record.

She outclassed South African swimmer Tayla Jonker (2 minutes, 21 seconds, and 84 hundredths) and Namibian swimmer Jessica Humphrey (2 minutes, 24 seconds, and 73 hundredths) to secure the top spot on the podium.

Following her victory, Anishta Teeluck expressed her joy at winning the race, despite not feeling entirely confident at the start.

“I am very happy to have won the gold. The time I clocked is good. I gave my all in the race. I wasn’t confident of winning because I knew the South African representative was a fast swimmer. But I was determined to come out on top. I hope Mauritians are pleased with this performance. I urge them to continue following our performances,” said the gold medalist.
