Card Transactions, Internet and Mobile Banking on the Rise

Mauritius has seen a surge in electronic payment transactions over the year from August 2022 to August 2023, with mobile transactions, the use of debit and credit cards, ATM usage, and merchant point of sale (POS) transactions on the rise.
Data released by the Supervision Department shows that debit cards are the most frequently used, with the total number of cards in circulation at approximately 1.9 million as of August 2023, representing an increase month-on-month since August 2022.
Credit cards, on the other hand, show a decrease in outstanding advances, despite an increase in the value of transactions. Internet banking is also on the rise, with a total of 691,450 customers and 680,702 transactions processed by the end of August 2023.
The data also highlights that mobile payments and banking are gaining popularity in Mauritius, with the number of subscribers and active agents rising steadily over the past year.
According to the Monthly Statistical Bulletin released by the Bank of Mauritius, card transactions, internet banking, and mobile payments have seen a significant increase in usage in the country.
