Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy has reassured that there will be no significant increase in fuel prices by the end of this year.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the Mauritius Revenue Authority, Padayachy stated that the situation is being closely monitored and that measures will be taken to avoid any hike that could harm the economy.

He acknowledged public anger over the recent rise in diesel prices, but noted that government revenues are directly and indirectly redistributed to the population, including through payment of pensions and benefits to vulnerable groups.

Padayachy also warned that corruption hampers economic growth, and stressed that measures were in place to reduce the problem in Mauritius.

The workshop, a five-day anti-corruption training programme, is being run by the World Customs Organisation in collaboration with the MRA.
