Speaker Phokeer’s Handling of Question Time Draws Mixed Reactions

The conclusion of Tuesday’s Question Time session in the National Assembly has sparked controversy among political figures, particularly those closely linked to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
According to Le Mauricien, key government figures have expressed dissatisfaction with Speaker Sooroojdev Phokeer’s approach, believing it overshadowed the favourable Privy Council judgment.
Despite instructions to maintain a serene atmosphere, tensions arose, leading to expulsions of four opposition leaders – Paul Bérenger, Rajesh Bhagwan, Patrick Assirvaden, and Joanna Bérenger.
“The stagehand been set for a serene session, aiming to capitalise on the Privy Council’s decision. However, Speaker Phokeer’s interventions took the spotlight away from Jugnauth’s legal triumph, evoking strong reactions in the public and on social media.
Insiders reveal that the Speaker’s actions diverged from the plan to make Pravind Jugnauth the central figure,” Le Mauricien reported.
