Mauritius Court Drops Charges Against Journalist

The controversial Special Striking Team led by ASP Ashik Jagai faced a setback in court after the representative of the Director of Public Prosecutions cited a lack of evidence to justify pursuing charges against journalist Harish Chundunsing.
Hence, Curepipe Court Magistrate Karina Dwarka-Davay dismissed the provisional charge filed by the Special Striking Team back in May.
Chundunsing had been accused of “using a telecommunication service for the transmission of a false message” after capturing on video what he deemed as suspicious police manoeuvres around a suspect’s vehicle.
Despite providing a Rs 10,000 bail and signing a Rs 20,000 bond, Chundunsing was detained. The DPP representative contended that the evidence presented by Jagai’s team did not warrant a conviction.
