Electoral Register Controversy: Commissioner Responds to Anomaly Claims

In the wake of recent comments made by Navin Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party, regarding the latest electoral register, the Electoral Commissioner’s office has issued a response. The office has attributed a “technical glitch” during the online publication of the 2023 electoral register on its website to the new interface that “briefly displayed statistics from 2021 as if they were from 2022”.

The Electoral Commissioner’s Office said the interface has since then been fully updated and the display error was rectified. It further stated that the website now features a new interface for improved visualisation of electoral register data, including interactive functionality. This includes comparative displays of the number of voters per constituency and year since 1982.

At a recent public congress in Vacoas, Ramgoolam questioned the recent electoral register data.

Starting with the number of registered voters in constituency no. 8 (Quartier-Militaire/Moka), Ramgoolam had denounced a suspicious 4,800 rise in the number of voters. He had also commented on the number of voters in the constituency no. 5 (Pamplemousses/Triolet), which had risen by 5,723.
