Mauritius faces acute shortage of contraceptive pills
An acute shortage of contraceptive pills – including popular brands such as Microgynon and Melodene, Minesse, Minulette and Désogestrel – has been reported in multiple pharmacies across Mauritius.
The Pharmacy Council has confirmed the stock issue, particularly with lower-cost pills, attributing it to reduced production by the manufacturer and difficulties in sourcing raw materials due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some women are unable to find their usual pills and are facing challenges in accessing alternative options, which are often more expensive, Le Mauricien reported.
Reacting to the situation, the Union of Pharmacists has reportedly suggested amending the law to allow parallel imports as a potential solution to address high drug prices.
Social media users have expressed their concerns about the shortage, calling for better long-term supply strategies and legislative changes.
