Government won't introduce Freedom of Information Act, PM reveals

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced that his government would not be presenting a Freedom of Information Bill. This statement came in response to a question by MMM MP Deven Nagalingum.

Jugnauth said that his administration has implemented several measures to enhance transparency in the country’s governance.

He highlighted the Declaration of Assets Act, the Government Information Service’s communication campaign, the establishment of a National Open Data Portal, and the dissemination of parliamentary proceedings as additional steps taken to foster transparency.

In justifying the government’s decision not to pursue a Freedom of Information Act, Jugnauth cited concerns regarding its cost and the “experiences of other nations” that have implemented similar legislation.

He suggested that some countries have “regretted” the introduction of such laws.

The absence of a Freedom of Information Bill has sparked debate among civil society organizations and opposition members, who argue that it is a crucial tool for ensuring accountability and empowering citizens with access to information.
