Cost of living: Mauritius social worker on 3rd day of hunger strike

Dana Chengan, former Chairman of the Mauritius Council of Social Service (Macoss), has launched a fervent appeal to the government for support to the most vulnerable in society. In his quest to be heard, Chengan has embarked on a hunger strike at Cathedral Square, Port-Louis, now (May 24) on its third day.

With unwavering determination, the protester insists on seeing his protest through to the end. He firmly believes that the current situation demands urgent attention. “I have made this decision to amplify the voices of the poorest,” Chengan told Defi Media.

According to the social worker, approximately 30% to 40% of Mauritians earning between Rs 15,000 and Rs 18,000 per month struggle to make ends meet.

He emphasises that the increased interest rates have further exacerbated the difficulties faced by these individuals.

“We can readjust the interest rates, which directly impact the cost of food. These individuals are forced to make sacrifices at the expense of innocent children going hungry,” he laments.

Chengan also advocates for an upward revision of the minimum wage or the introduction of a “ration card” for those truly in need.

Championing an inclusive society, he fervently hopes that the government will respond promptly and provide an explanation regarding the measures it intends to implement to alleviate the distress faced by vulnerable individuals.

Political activist Bruneau Laurette, who visited him, told l’Express that Dana Chengan’s fight is a national one. He has urged Mauritians to support the hunger striker in his noble battle so that he can go further.

“It is a fight against the high cost of living.”
