Water crisis: Desalinated, purified seawater to be sold to CWA

The government is considering the possibility of engaging alternative water suppliers as part of the seawater desalination project, soon after the introduction of a new law governing the water sector, currently in preparation.

The water sector is set for significant changes with the upcoming presentation of the New Water Resources Bill to the National Assembly.

However, Defi Media cited sources as revealing that the Budget 2023-24 speech may already announce certain measures included in the draft legislation.

There is a strong possibility that private producers of potable water will be approached to initiate the seawater desalination project.

Once desalinated and purified, the water would be sold to the Central Water Authority (CWA) for distribution across the country.

The ministry has reportedly clarified that the project is still in its early stages, and experts in desalination may be consulted.
