The Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), Dr Marcin Czepelak, is currently on an official week-long visit in Mauritius.
During his visit, he met with the Attorney General Maneesh Gobin, to discuss Mauritius’ ambition to become an arbitration hub.
Minister Gobin was cited as saying that hosting arbitrations in Mauritius would attract service providers and generate revenue for the country, contributing to its growth and development.
Dr Czepelak, in his first visit to Mauritius since his appointment as Secretary-General, intends to familiarise himself with the country’s judiciary system and support its improvement.
He highlighted Mauritius’ significance as one of the first international countries to host the PCA’s office.
The PCA is an international court and organisation with 122 Contracting Parties, including 24 African states, and Mauritius has been a party since August 3, 1970.
The PCA Mauritius Office comprises three Legal Counsel, including one who serves as the PCA Representative in Mauritius, an Assistant Legal Counsel, and a Case Manager.
Additionally, three government officials provide assistance in managing the office on a daily basis.
The PCA’s administrative services include facilitating communication, safekeeping of documents, financial administration, logistical and technical support for meetings and hearings, travel arrangements, and general secretarial and linguistic support.
In some cases, a staff member of the International Bureau may be appointed as a registrar or administrative secretary to carry out administrative tasks as directed by the arbitral tribunal.
