In what is being described as a “shocking turn of events”, the depths of parliamentary decorum were reportedly plumbed yesterday with the Prime Minister’s “feat.”

According to local media, PM Pravind Jugnauth “revealed” the articles seized from ex-PM Navin Ramgoolam’s coffers back in February 2015. These included new bank notes worth some Rs230 million, testosterone boosters and other pills, Jugnauth revealed.

“As if, after a bout of hyperactive sexual escapades (possibly fuelled by performance-enhancing substances), the beast resorts to other substances for respite. Even Casanova himself could not have conjured up such a cocktail,” Jugnauth was cited as telling Parliament.

“This elicited snickers and disparaging remarks from some MPs, creating an atmosphere of vulgarity rarely witnessed within the walls of the Chamber,” l’Express reported.

The conduct exhibited by the Prime Minister has drawn sharp rebukes from his detractors, who accuse him of using the platform for cheap political gains and character assassination.

Many observers, including former Vice President of the Republic Raouf Bundhun, contended that such a display of “crassness” has no place in Parliament.

“The chamber, renowned for its decorum and intellectual discourse, was reduced to a mere stage for political grandstanding and personal attacks. This disturbing episode has left a stain on the integrity and dignity of the institution,” he said.
