Real estate generates Rs27.7Bn, is the main source of direct investment in Mauritius

The gross amount of direct investment in Mauritius in 2022 was Rs 27.7 billion in 2022, compared to Rs 18.5 billion in 2021, Le Mauricien reported, citing data published by the Bank of Mauritius (BoM).

The real estate sector was the main beneficiary of gross direct investment inflows, which were mainly received under the IRS/RES/IHS/PDS/SCS1 (from Rs 8.9 billion in 2021 to Rs 15.4 billion in 2022).

This amount included investments in areas such as the Integrated Resort Scheme, the Real Estate Scheme, the Invest Hotel Scheme, the Property Development Scheme and the Smart City Scheme.

This was followed by the Education and Accommodation and Catering sectors. Gross direct investment in Mauritius came mainly from France and North America.

The automotive sector declined in 2022, with investments of Rs 180 million compared to Rs1 billion in 2021.

At the same time, investments in the health sector tripled, from Rs 232 million in 2021 to Rs 656 million in 2022.

The manufacturing sector also recorded a decline in direct investment, from Rs 996 million in 2021 to Rs 230 million in 2022. As for the financial and insurance sector, it also recorded a decrease in foreign investment, from Rs 2.7 billion in 2021 to Rs 658 million in 2022.
