The MSM-led Alliance Morisien has reconnected with public meetings by bringing together several thousand people – according to MSM leader Pravind Jugnauth – not only to celebrate Labour Day, but also to mark the 40th anniversary of the MSM.

Jugnauth announced that he will complete his five-year mandate, while accused the opposition opposition parties to be associated with the drug mafia and horse racing.

The meeting was chaired by Joe Lesjongard. Speakers were Soodesh Callichurn, Renganaden Padayachy, Fazila Daureeawoo, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun as well as Steven Obeegadoo, Alan Ganoo and Ivan Collendavelloo.

However, the floor was not given to the Secretary General of the MSM, Maneesh Gobin, currently being subject of denunciations at the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

Attacking the Labour Party, Jugnauth said Navin Ramgoolam’s leadership is considered “unworthy by his own people”.

He added that the MMM  has become a “small party”, which is also “weaker than ever” – and which “does not deserve more than 10 tickets” in an electoral alliance.

Pravind Jugnauth said his government has been working on establishing social justice with the introduction of the minimum wage of Rs 13,075.

In total, he claimed the social measures introduced by the government have allowed the population to “get back Rs 125 billion”.

Pravind Jugnauth also rejected the accusations concerning attacks on democracy, believing that there is “abuse of democracy on social networks”.

However, he praised the Economist Intelligence Unit which has, in its latest Democracy Index, ranked Mauritius 21st in the world.

On the other hand, he accused the United States, “to be 30th” for “saying falsehoods about Mauritius” in the report published by the State Department.

“They should have swept in front of their door,” he said.
