Mauritius registers over 1,100 cybercrimes in just four months

A shocking 1,162 cybercrimes were reported on the Mauritian Cybercrime Online Reporting System (Maucors) of the Computer Emergency Response Team of Mauritius (CERT-MU) from January 1 to April 20, 2023.

The main crimes are scams, harassment and identity theft.

“There has been a phenomena growth in terms of identity theft – where people take your photos, create a Facebook profile and do inappropriate/illegal things. It has become too easy to create a fake profile on social networks and throw mud on others,” said ICT Minister Deepak Balgobin.

The National Cybersecurity Committee has called on the government to quickly define a cybersecurity framework for sensitive facilities such as the port, airport, the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) and the Financial Services Commission (FSC), among others.
