Mauritius corporate mailboxes under attack, cybersecurity firm warns

Cybersecurity firm Storm Guidance has warned local corporates that their mailboxes are under attack.

“Forget that image of a hacker trying to crack a password with sophisticated software or computer knowledge. Today, cybercriminals are using much simpler methods by relying on the human error of their victims,” Storm MD Neil Hare-Brown has been cited as telling Defi Media.

“Companies are not protecting themselves enough. A corporate email compromise occurs when a cybercriminal gains unauthorised access to the user’s email box. It is not only the messages that can be read, but also all attached documents, as well as calendars and contacts, etc.,” he claimed.

“These are fake emails from companies to trick users into revealing their passwords. Once logged in, the hackers read recent messages looking for invoices. They change the bank details of an invoice to divert the payment to their own account,” he said.

Recent incidents of corporate email compromise that the company has investigated have involved the diversion of school fees and property transactions.
