Labour Party fights uphill battle to get back frozen funds
Supreme Court

The Labour Party is fighting an uphill legal battle to get back its money frozen at Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) since 2015.

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is opposing the opposition party’ request to unfreeze the bank account. The Labour Party’s motion is currently being debated before Supreme Court Justices Shameen Hamuth-Laulloo and Denis Mootoo.

In an affidavit, Labour President Patrick Assirvaden argued that the party urgently needs the funds for administrative expenses and to fund its activities.

He also argued that the party will have to support its leader, Navin Ramgoolam, who had to make an emergency trip to India in September 2021 for treatment.

The account holders are Navin Ramgoolam and Siven Poinoosamy.

The MCB has said that it will abide by the Supreme Court’s decision.
