Mauritius President Prithviraj Singh Roopun toured the ancient monuments of Indian town of Mamallapuram with his family amidst high security.

Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram, is known for its temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries.

According to local media, President Roopun attended his cousin’s house function held in Chennai on Saturday. On Sunday, he toured the ancient symbols of Mamallapuram Beach Temple, Five Raths, Arjuna Tapasu, Butter Ball Rock “and took photographs with his family”.

“Officials of the Government of Mauritius enjoyed touring Mamallapuram with him. A large number of policemen led by Mamallapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagatheeswaran were gathered for his protection,” local publications Puthiyathalaimurai reported.

An official statement issued by President Roopun’s office stated that he would be on a private visit to Chennai, India, until 15 November.

He would then participate at the 23rd ‘International Conference of Chief Justices of the World’ as a Guest of the Uttar Pradesh Government in Lucknow from 16 to 22 November. He is expected back on 23 November.

Until then, Eddy Boissézon will be Acting President of the Republic.
