Journalists from two media groups in Mauritius have filed a police complaint on Thursday, demanding an investigation into threats against them. Radio Plus Director of News Nawaz Noorbux, TelePlus editor Jean Luc Emile and journalist Al khizr Ramdin claimed they received information that their “safety is at risk”.
They also claimed that certain Facebook groups close to the island’s ruling party are allegedly plotting to link them to drug trafficking.
Journalists have reportedly been attacked and threatened on social networks for some time, particularly by a handful of occult Facebook pages that openly promote the MSM ruling party.
On Thursday, they published a poster accusing them of being accomplices of drug traffickers.
Top FM Director Kris Kaunhye has also filed a Precautionary Measure following the release of an alleged ‘Hit List’ containing his name by the controversial Police Special Striking Team.
The Linion Pep Morisien (LPM) has expressed unconditional support to the journalists who are allegedly being “threatened” on social networks.
The extra-parliamentary opposition party has reportedly sent letters to several foreign media (Media Part, Le Monde, Le Figaro, BBC, The Times of India, Washington Post, among others),embassies and international bodies such as the United Nations, the European Union and the African Union to denounce what it calls an “attack on freedom of expression”.
Similar concerns came from Labour Party MP Arvin Boolell. The latter announced that the party plans to also alert international organisations.
