COVID-19 is back: Almost 500 new cases detected in 24 hours

Health authorities have reported 493 new positive cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

According to Dr. Kursheed Meethoo-Badulla, Regional Public Health Superintendent, the majority of cases relate to less severe forms of COVID-19.

However, around dozen of acute forms have also been detected.

The news coincided with the announcement of Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal  to further ease COVID-19 related restrictions.

As from Saturday 12 November, the wearing of masks will no longer be compulsory in public transports including Metro Express, taxis as well as at the passenger terminal (port and airport).

However, the wearing of face masks would remain mandatory in health institutions, pharmacies, nursing homes, care homes and disability care facilities.
