Mrs Chagoonah Bappoo becomes 170th centenarian of Mauritius

Mrs Chagoonah Bappoo has become the170th centenarian of Mauritius. She celebrated the event with family and friends at Professor Baguant Hall in Quartier Militaire late last week. 

During the celebrations, Mrs Chagoonah Bappoo was offered a cheque of Rs 26 203, a gas water heater, a bouquet, the centenarian medal and a certificate by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.

A cheque of Rs 10 000 was also remitted to the new centenarian by the National Solidarity Fund of the Ministry while the Senior Citizens Council presented her with gifts. 

Mrs Chagoonah Bappoo, known as ‘Aji Bhagartee’, was born at Midlands and was the youngest of a family of four children. She worked as a labourer with no fixed employer.

Her husband, whom she religiously married when she was 16 years old, was a labourer, and died in August 1984. She had nine children, four sons and five daughters, of whom, six are alive.

Mrs Chagoonah Bappoo has 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. She attributes her longevity to her faith in God.

As at 28 October 2022, of the 170 people in the Republic of Mauritius aged 100 or above, 147 were female, compared to 23 males.
