Health Advisory: Mauritius records increase in Gastroenteritis cases

Health authorities have warned against the resurgence of gastroenteritis cases in recent weeks.
Viral gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection that includes signs and symptoms such as watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever.
Over the past two weeks, 1,751 cases were recorded, 875 cases during the week of October 10-16 and 876 during the week of October 17-23.
The situation is reportedly due to the heat and the consumption of undercooked food, or food prepared in poor hygienic conditions or poorly preserved.
Healthy adults are likely to recover without complications. But for infants, older adults and people with compromised immune systems, viral gastroenteritis can be deadly.
There’s no effective treatment for viral gastroenteritis.
