The salary of the chief taxman of Mauritius goes public, sparks outrage

It’s the talk of the town: A document tabled at the National Assembly has revealed the salary of Sudhamo Lal, the Director General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA).

The information, which has gone viral, follows a Parliamentary question by Opposition MP Ehsan Juman.

The latter expressed shock when it was revealed that Mr Sudhamo Lal was paid a monthly package of Rs 944,495 (Basic: Rs 859,625, an allowance of Rs 61,640 for his rental expenses and a Petrol Allowance of Rs 23,230).

The package, Juman remarked, ishigher than that of the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic.

He also deplored that the MRA continues to track down only small entrepreneurs and businesses. “It’s very rare to see the MRA focus on companies that are making billions of rupees.

“Are there any officers under the MRA’s Director General who can afford to challenge the big companies in Mauritius?” he was quoted as asking.

Quizzed by l’Express, Mr Lal refused to comment on the public outrage triggered on social media.
