Five foreign workers go missing in Mauritius within two weeks

Five foreign workers have gone missing in Mauritius over the last two weeks, according to local media.

During the week, a bakery manager reported the disappearance to the police of two Bangladeshi workers, aged 29 and 33. In Mauritius since less than a month, the duo has not been tracked down since July 30 and 31.

Two other women from Bangladesh, aged 36 and 37, have also reportedly gone missing since Tuesday. They had been employed in a factory at Phoenix for several years.

The last one who has disappeared since July 16 is a 33-year-old Malagasy operator.

Were all these people working legally? Why not clamp down on people who “employ” foreign workers as slave labour? Surely we don’t need to continue historical practices in the 21st century?
