New Mauritian centenarian owes longevity to God and prayers

Miss Marie Gisele Emmanuel, born on 31 July 1922, celebrated her 100th birthday at her residence in Roche Bois.

On her birthday, the centenarian received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 21,836; a cheque to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; one certificate and; a food processor.

Miss Emmanuel was born on July 31, 1922 at Church Street, Port Louis. Her father worked as a messenger at the Municipality of Port Louis and her mother was a housewife. All her siblings have passed away.

She was educated up to Standard 6. In order to support her family, she started to work at the age of 12 in a wine factory where she used to fill bottles with wine. She worked till the age of 60.

She was admitted to Mère Theresa Home in 2005 as there was no one in her family to take care of her.

She has no major health issues and walks with the support of a walking frame. She has recovered from a surgery recently due to fracture on her thigh.

Miss Emmanuel eats both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and says she likes wine on special occasions. 

The centenarian dedicates her longevity to her belief and faith in God and never misses her prayers.
