Bigger shocks are coming with your electricity bills

Already frustrated and angry about high gasoline prices, Mauritius could soon be hit by higher electricity bills, compounding inflation’s financial toll on people and businesses.
The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has begun its consultations with various stakeholders over the proposed increase of electricity tariffs.
Consumer rights activist Suttyhudeo Tengur said this upward revision will weigh heavily on consumers’ budgets.
“Such an increase could also affect our exports”, the Consumers Association of Mauritius (ACIM) said that a possible increase must be justified by scientific data.
A few months ago, the Central Electricity Board (CEB) had urged the government to consider to price hike due to soaring prices of heavy oil and coal on the international market.
According to certain media reports, the spike could hit 30%.
