Coming up: Adjustment of wages for 70,300 private sector employees

Labour and Commerce Minister Soodesh Callichurn has announced a Wage Relativity Adjustment exercise in favour of some 70,300 private sector employees as from July 1, 2022 for a maximum amount of Rs 1,000 per month.

The Wage Relativity Adjustment covers 17 private sectors with a view to restoring the distortion in wage relativity with the implementation of the minimum wage in 2018.

Le Mauricien reported that the adjustment will be made “in a phased manner over a period of three years as  from 1st July 2022”.

However, given the specificities of Catering and the SME sectors, the adjustment would take effect from July 1, 2023.

On another matter, the minister was cited as saying that an inter-ministerial committee has been set up to look into the possibility of amending the Industrial Property Act 2019 and allow parallel imports, mainly focused on pharmaceuticals and food products.

This committee will submit its recommendations to Cabinet soon.
