Medicines worth Rs40 million thrown away

Medicines worth Rs40 million whose validity had expired have been destroyed between 2013 and 2020.

A total of 89 tonnes of expired drugs were collected by a contractor, handled by the Solid Waste Management Division and stored in an interim facility for eventual disposal.

This was recently revealed by Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal after being quizzed in Parliament by Labour MPs Mahen Gungapersad.

The latter criticized the wastage as being the result of poor planning.

Minister Jagutpal responded that there is no exact science to “determine in advance how much medicine the ministry will use.”

In Mauritius, 3% of pharmaceutical products are thrown away.
