Opposition MP to lodge ‘motion of disallowance’ against price hikes

Labour Party MP Shakeel Mohamed said he will present a ‘motion of disallowance’ against the recent hikes in the prices of fuel and cooking gas.
The opposition MP also deplored current powers entitling Ministers to amend major regulations without going through Parliament.
“It’s time that the Prime Minister stops thinking like a junior politician and grows up into a Statesman so he can listen to others as the Government does not hold the monopoly of knowledge. The country has gone bankrupt. There’s a lot to do,” he was cited as telling l’Express.
His statement came soon after the State Trading Corporation (STC) hiked the prices of LPG, gasoline and diesel within 24 hours, triggering popular outcry and protests.
He has also criticised the government for maintaining taxes on fuel for the acquisition of COVID-19 vaccines “that were received in donation.”
