Run a business? Your electricity bill could rise by 30% soon

With petrol and gas prices hitting new highs, the Central Electricity Board has said a higher electricity tariff is increasingly inevitable.

And it will be the large electricity consumers that will be targeted first, according to Defi Media.

The technical committee working on the project is expected to submit its recommendations to the Board of the CEB by the end of the month.

If approved, the report will be submitted to the Cabinet for the final green light.

The newspaper cited unnamed sources at the CEB as revealing that the likely increase
will be split in two categories: households (10%) and businesses (up to 30%).

By the sound of it, the hardest hit will be those that use more than100 KW/Hr per month – essentially large businesses.

The CEB recorded a staggering 67% drop in income: from Rs 1.5 billion in February 2020 to Rs 500 million in April 2020.

The price of electricity was reportedly last raised in 2010.
