Party calls for private sector land to be used for food production

Minor leftist party Lalit has demanded that a state of emergency and food sovereignty be declared as soon as possible.

Her call came in the wake of the global ramifications of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the unfolding global disruption in the food supply chain.

Lalit’s request was intended to the Ministry of Finance within the framework of the pre- budgetary consultations.

The party has proposed that, besides state land, at least a third of land owned by “big land owners” be used for food production for at least five years.

It has also called for the cancellation of fishing rights to foreign vessels in favour of Mauritian fishermen.
