Met Office issues 'heavy rain' warning for the west coast and centre

The Mauritius Meteorological Services issued a ‘Heavy rain’ warning for the Western region and the Central Plateau, valid until 7pm Tuesday 22 March 2022.

Convective clouds reportedly developed over the island on Monday afternoon.

Moderate to heavy showers with thunderstorms were registered, causing temporary water accumulation in certain areas.

The Ministry of Education suspended face-to-face classes for students from pre-primary, primary, secondary, SEN (Special Education Needs) schools, technical and vocational education centers including those of MITD and Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd and higher education institutions and tertiary this Tuesday, March 22.

During the heavy thundery showers, the public is advised to:

  • remain in safe places and avoid open areas, hiking, sea ventures and sheltering under trees.
  • avoid places prone to water accumulation and flooding.
  • be very cautious on the roads due water runoff and reduced visibility.
